Easter in Spain
Semana Santa in Ibiza
Semana Santa means “holy week” in Spanish. This holy week is from April 2 to April 9, 2023 and is celebrated extensively in Spain and so in Ibiza. Many parades can be found in various places in Ibiza during this week, with these parades focusing on the Easter story, which is also the final seven days of the Lent.
Holy Week starts on April 2, which in Spanish is also called the “Domingo de Ramos,” the day Jesus arrives in Jerusalem. Starting this day, several processions are held daily, with the largest being held in Ibiza Town and Santa Eularia. These processions center on passion, death and the memorial of the rebirth of Jesus Christ and are performed by attendants in medieval clothing from Catholic churches. They carry large platforms with images of saints on them during a procession of 20 to 40 people. Very impressive to see, and well worth a visit when in Ibiza between April 2 and 9!
The largest procession takes place on the Good Friday, April 8, in the old town of Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town. In this, they walk the procession from the cathedral at the top of the Dalt Vila through the narrow streets down towards Ibiza Town. During this parade, do not expect cheerfulness, but rather sad music.
