Practical information about Ibiza

Safety

Ibiza is a rather safe island in general. However it’s always good to be cautious. There are many wealthy people on the island and that attracts criminals. So, keep an eye on your belongings and preferably use a safe when available. We also recommend you to hide valuable items. A cereal box or a vase will be suitable. Burglars are often in a hurry and steal items that catch the eye.

Upon arrival at the airport we recommend you not to where expensive notable jewelry and watches. Even be careful with expensive bags. Thieves are lurking around the airport and follow you to your villa. They will wait until you leave and strike.

Another pointer is renting a too obvious car at the airport. Also be careful when getting into your newly rented car at the airport. Sometimes, unsuspecting people will come around asking for directions while you are loading the vehicle. Once you are distracted, a partnering thief will unnoticeably take off with your suitcase!

Areas in Ibiza

Ibiza town

Ibiza Town (also known as Eivissa): The capital of the island. Ibiza has a very old city center (Dalt Vila), surrounded by 16th century city walls. The old heart is an eclectic mix of small streets, old houses and features nice bars and restaurants. In addition, Ibiza town holds a lot of cute little (clothing) shops that are definitely worth visiting. On the other side of the harbour you will find Marina Botafoch, the yacht harbour scattered with super yachts. Here you will find club Lio and Pacha. At the end of this area is Talamanca, a cozy bay with a beautiful beach and a few nice restaurants such as the Harbour Club. Playa d’en Bossa is located south of Ibiza town, 5 minutes away by car. The largest beach on the island mostly visited by youngsters. There are many beach clubs here such as Beachouse, Nassau and Coco beach. Playa d’en Bossa is also home to the well renowned Ushuaia.

San Jose

San Jose (also called Sant Josep de sa Talaia): A nice little village with some restaurants. The village is located centrally in the southwest of the island. San Jose serves as a gateway to some of Ibiza’s most beautiful beaches. (Cala Jondal, Cala Vadella, Cala D’Hort, etc.)

San Antonio

San Antonio (also called Sant Antoni de Portmany): the second largest city on the island. San Antonio is the go to place for mostly younger people. A bit of a noisy crowded city, especially during the summer months. San Antonio is home to some bustling clubs as Eden, Es Paradis and The Zoo Project. There are several beautiful beaches nearby such as Cala Salada, Cala Bassa and Es Torrent.

San Juan

San Juan (also called Sant Joan de Labritja): This is the northern province. Generally it’s much quieter here compared to the southern part. San Juan is also the name of a lovely sleepy village. Here are the many real typical fincas (old Spanish farms). The north features some very nice beaches, such as Aguas Blancas or Benirras and Cala d’en Serra. However in high season Benirras will be particularly crowded on Sunday because of the recurring beach parties which we highly recommend. If you are looking to spend your holiday in a tranquil environment with beautiful houses and lots of peace we recommend the north. In addition, it is often cheaper than the south in terms of rental rates!

Santa Eularia

Santa Eularia (also called Santa Eulalia des Riu): This is the third largest city of the island. Santa Eularia however doesn’t feel like a tourtist city. It’s not swarming with youngsters, but with more elderly people. The town itself is really nice and features some beautiful restaurants as Babylon beach and ViCool. Santa Eularia also has a big harbour. An ideal startingpoint for a trip on a boat. In the vicinity are beaches as Niu Blau and Cala Martina. A bit further east you will find Nikki Beach. Slightly further north you will find cozy villages as San Carlos and Es Canar.

Weather, Climate and Travel Time

Ibiza has a favorable climate throughout the entire year, but most people prefer to come here during the summer. Because of the sea, it never gets much hotter than 30 degrees C. The chance of sun in this period is almost 100%! Not only that, the months of June and September also are very popular. With temperatures of around 25-30 degrees C and the sun shining often, it’s the perfect time for you to relax. Even April, May, October, and November are great times to visit. Then, the temperature averages20-25 degrees C. The sea is still cool in April (15 degrees C), and in October and November, it is just the right warmth of around 18-21 degrees C. In addition, it is very quiet at this time on the island. (Please note, however, that flights to the island in the winter season are indirect, with a stopover in Barcelona).

Money

On the island, you pay with the Euro. Credit cards are accepted everywhere. Smart card Chip & Pin payments are accepted in very many places.

Tips

A 10-15% tip is customary.

Language

Spanish and Catalan are spoken on the island. Hence, the varying names of the villages and cities.

Roads

Ibiza’s roads are mostly well maintained. In some places they can be very curvy, mostly along the coast. Don’t drive too fast, you never know what’s around the corner. When you exit the paved road it can be a bit bumpy. The dirt roads are overall pretty decent however some spots might be a bit tattered and rocky due to heavy rainfall. In general this shouldn’t present any problems. Keep in mind that during summer the roads can be very crowded. Also be real careful after rainfall, even the paved roads will be real slippery and accidents are just waiting to happen. Make sure to keep your distance.
